What’s the Best Way to Get Rid of Fungus Gnats in My Plants?

I've been struggling with what I thought were fruit flies, but I think they're actually fungus gnats since they're crawling around happily in the soil of my plants. I've tried the typical honey, vinegar, and dish soap trap, but it hasn't worked for me at all. Can anyone suggest effective methods to eliminate these pests?

Definitely get some Gnatrol—it works wonders. You can use it every time you water your plants. Fungus gnats can damage roots, so it’s important to tackle them early. Also, if you want to prevent them completely, try microwaving or cooking your soil before using it.

If you’re using soil-based substrate for your plants, Gnatrol could be your best bet. It’s a larvacide that helps eliminate fungus gnats over about two weeks. You just mix the granules in the water you use to water your plants. Keep in mind to let the top 2-3 inches of soil dry out before watering. This method has kept me gnat-free for months!

It sounds like you might have fungus gnats instead of fruit flies. They thrive in the soil, so the trap you mentioned isn't going to help much. I'd recommend trying Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to flush them out. After that, cover the top of the soil with sand to stop them from breeding again. This method has worked well for me!

Absolutely! Just make sure your pots have good drainage too.

Thanks! What's Bt exactly?
