What’s the Best Way to Get Rid of Tulips to Keep My Cats Safe?

Asked By CatLover385 On

I'm dealing with an ongoing issue at my rental house. The previous owner planted tulips along the back, and despite my efforts to remove them, they keep coming back every spring. I've tried pulling them up and even using weed killer, but they've returned again. Since I have cats that I supervise outdoors, I'm really worried because tulips are toxic to them. I want to make sure they can enjoy the yard safely without me worrying about the tulips. Any advice on effectively getting rid of these bulbs?

Good point! Tulips aren't as appealing to cats as other plants. Just keep an eye out occasionally, and your cats should be alright.

If you're really stuck, just wait for the tulips to sprout so you can see where to dig. And honestly, I've never met a cat that would eat tulips. Most animals seem to know what's good for them.

Using a hori hori knife can be great for digging up those bulbs. It's best to do it when the soil's a bit damp but not soaked, and don’t forget to wait until they sprout, as the leaves will help guide you to where the bulbs are buried.
Also, while tulips can be harmful, they're actually not as bad as some people think. The most dangerous part is definitely the bulb, but if you're keeping a watchful eye, your cats should be fine!

A straightforward option is just keeping your cats inside if that's feasible. Outdoor cats can be a concern for wildlife and are also at risk from various dangers like cars and predators. If you have to let them out, consider making a secure space where they can enjoy the outdoors without those tulips around.

Exactly! Plus, it helps protect your garden from becoming a litter box for outdoor cats.

Yeah, but OP mentioned they supervise their cats. It's cool to bring them out safely, just not to let them roam free.
