What’s the Best Way to Handle Painted Tile and Bathtub?

I recently bought a house where both bathrooms have painted tiles on the vanities and the bathtub. Unfortunately, there's quite a bit of chipping in the paint, and I'm not sure what kind of paint was used. Since I can't afford a full remodel right now, I'm wondering if I should try to strip the paint or if I can just repaint it. I'd really like to strip it to see what condition the surfaces are in, but I'm open to repainting if that's a viable option. Any tips or advice?

First off, you'll want to figure out what kind of paint is currently on your tile and tub. If it's standard paint, you might be able to strip it off with a paint remover. But if it's an epoxy enamel, that’s tougher, and you may need a more specific approach. It really helps to do a little test to see how the paint reacts! If stripping is too complicated, you could consider repainting with a good quality epoxy paint made for bathrooms. Just make sure to prep the surface well by cleaning and sanding it before applying anything new!

Great point about the epoxy paint! I had a similar situation, and using a specific bathroom spray paint made all the difference for durability.

To check the paint type, see if it's hard and glossy (probably epoxy) or softer and less shiny (possibly regular paint). If you're stripping it, use a gentle approach to avoid damaging the surfaces underneath. And if you decide to repaint, go for a paint that’s specially made for tiles and bathtubs to withstand moisture. Good luck!
