I'm trying to hang an antique mirror that weighs about 40 lbs above our sink, but the studs on that wall are all over the place. I've used regular anchors for lightweight items before, but I'm worried that heavy-duty anchors won't be enough since the drywall could fail before the anchors do. My wife is really keen on using this mirror, so I'm looking for the best way to secure it without risking damage. Any suggestions?

For heavy-duty options, there are anchors rated up to 100 lbs. Just make sure to choose ones rated at least 60 lbs since your mirror is 40 lbs. The stronger, the better to prevent any accidents!
You might want to consider making a French Cleat. This involves mounting a cleat across the studs, which provides a sturdy support framework for the mirror. It's a solid method for heavy items and might work great for your situation!
They actually sell these pre-made at most hardware stores!
You could also try using picture wire across the back of the mirror to hit a stud, or opt for toggle bolts. Just a heads up, if it does fall, you might have a good story about "I told you so!"
Anchors might not be the best choice here. I'm a fan of the 3M Claw fasteners; they’re super intuitive and strong. Alternatively, you could attach a 1x2 board to the studs and hang the mirror from that. Just keep in mind it’ll stick out a bit from the wall.
Without seeing the setup, it's tough to give specific advice, but if it fits the look, a piece of 3/4" plywood painted to match the wall could work. Just secure that to two studs and hang the mirror from it for better support.
Have you heard of Toggler Snaptoggle anchors? They distribute the weight well, and I’ve used them to hang much heavier items like shelves. I wouldn't hesitate to use them for a 40 lb mirror—they're really reliable!
I've used them professionally to hang 85" commercial TVs, and they hold up really well! Definitely a strong option for your mirror.

Totally agree! This method is super reliable.
