What’s the Best Way to Insulate My Wooden Shed for Extreme Temperatures?

Asked By ShedDude42 On

I've converted my wooden shed into a little movie theater, but I'm facing a big problem with insulation. It gets blazing hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter! I want to find the cheapest and easiest way to insulate it. I don't mind doing the work myself, and I'm not worried about how it looks. Any suggestions?

You’ll want to start with proper air sealing and insulation. Depending on how your shed is set up, adding insulation between the studs would be great. If you have drywall, it’ll hold that insulation in place really well. I insulated and drywalled my shed, and it stays nice and cool during the hot summers, plus it has a solid core door and a double-pane window.

What kind of insulation did you use? I'm curious if I should go for fiberglass or something else.

I used fiberglass insulation because it’s affordable and effective. Just make sure you cover it with drywall for better results!

For my shed, I went with 2" XPS foam insulation between the studs, which worked wonders. I also used a specific method for insulating the roof that has an air gap to vent heat and moisture. Check out this tutorial [here](https://youtu.be/U-SHOovROgM?si=ZWSTb7rCc65YiQTv) if you're interested!

XPS foam sounds interesting! I might give that a shot too!

Definitely worth it! Just make sure to leave that air gap.

Fiberglass insulation between the joists is a solid choice. Don’t forget a thermal barrier to increase the effectiveness! It’s also crucial to maintain proper ventilation. Adding a roof vent can help with hot air buildup too.

Great advice! Is there a specific type of vent you’d recommend for the roof?

A simple passive vent should do the trick, but if you want more control, consider an exhaust fan.
