What’s the best way to kill stubborn trees under a cattle guard?

I have some trees growing underneath my cattle guard that I need to get rid of before they start causing damage. I've cut them down a few times, but they just keep coming back and now they're spreading with new growth all over my cattle guard. Any effective methods I can use?

What type of trees are you dealing with? Normally, if you cut them low to the ground, you can quickly paint the stump with herbicide after cutting. Products like imazapyr and triclopyr usually work well for many tree types. If you're dealing with something like tree of heaven or another aggressive sprouting type, you might need a different strategy since cutting could make them spread even more.

I've got two kinds, one is definitely box elder, and the other might be cottonwood. They're really aggressive, and I see new growth everywhere now!
