I'm having a debate with friends about the right way to mulch around bushes that touch the ground. Should I mulch around them and just put a little mulch underneath, or should I lift the bottom of the bushes and put mulch all the way underneath while leaving the main area around them clear? Also, out of curiosity, what do you think professional landscapers typically do in these situations? Thanks for your input!

Generally, for shrubs that are full to the ground, you don’t really need to mulch all the way underneath them. Just mulching around them usually does the trick. As for landscapers, they often take the quickest route, which can sometimes lead to less-than-ideal practices, like cutting back shrubs too harshly or using too much mulch around plants. Yeah, I’ve seen that too! Some landscapers just use landscape fabric and bury plants improperly. It's a bit wild how often they do things wrong!
