What’s the best way to paint my composite interior door?

I just installed a composite interior door, but it doesn't quite match my white walls. I have some latex paint leftover, but I've heard mixed advice about how to properly paint this type of door. Some folks say I need a special paint to bond with the material, while others suggest using oil-based or sticking with latex. There's also confusion about surface prep—some say to clean it, while others recommend sanding. Can anyone offer clear, practical advice on how to go about this?

I've painted a bunch of these doors and it's pretty straightforward. Just grab a foam roller, start by working in the grooves, and then roll the flat areas. Since they're pre-primed, latex paint works just fine for indoors. To ensure a perfect match, you might need to touch up the wall color too, but I often choose a slightly darker shade for the door to add some contrast—keeps it from looking too bland!

When painting trim and doors, I recommend using a bright white finish with some sheen—it makes cleaning easier later on. Also, don’t forget to paint the top and bottom edges; the manufacturer insists that's key for avoiding issues with swelling over time. They might even void the warranty if you skip that part!

Here's what I do: lightly sand the door with a 220-grit sanding sponge (just enough to smooth it out without removing the primer). After that, vacuum up any dust and wipe it down with a tack cloth. For paint, I suggest using a different enamel paint made for cabinets or doors, like SW emerald urethane, especially if you catch it on sale—it's tougher and easier to clean than regular latex. A brush works great for the panels, and then a foam roller for the flat parts to smooth everything out. It really makes a difference!

You should check out Jeldwen's website; they have clear painting instructions for their doors. It's super helpful and takes the guesswork out of the process!
