I'm looking for the best approach to paint over varnished wood surfaces, specifically for doors. I've read that sanding is crucial, but I've gotten mixed messages about the process order and whether using TSP is really necessary. Any insights would be super helpful!

You might get away with it by sanding and then using a primer before the finish paint. But seriously, don't skip the primer—if you do, your paint might just end up flaking off later. That's frustrating! Also, if this is a major project, consider hiring a pro. Some guys took two days just sanding my built-ins!
The go-to method I’d recommend is: clean the surface, sand it down, wipe it clean, apply a shellac primer, and then topcoat with your paint of choice. This gives you a solid finish that sticks well! Just skipping the sand might lead to the paint not adhering properly. That’s no good!
Start by cleaning it with TSP or something similar, then give it a good sand. After that, I’d suggest applying a coat of B.I.N. primer by Zinsser before finishing with your topcoat. Some folks prefer shellac, but B.I.N. really gets the job done!

If you're looking for something cheaper, try Sherwin Williams shellac. It flows better and doesn't drip as much as B.I.N., so it could save you some hassle.
