What’s the Best Way to Pot My Plants?

I'm looking for advice on potting plants, specifically what kind of soil mix to use, which pots are suitable, and how to decide on pot size. I've also noticed some methods that incorporate stones, and I'm curious if they're used primarily for drainage purposes. Any tips?

Terracotta pots are a great choice because they're forgiving for new plant parents. Just make sure to use pots with drainage holes. A good rule of thumb for the soil mix is a 50:50 ratio of organic to inorganic materials. When it comes to pot size, aim for a diameter that’s about ½ inch to 1 inch larger than your plant. The stones you mentioned can be used as a top dressing or as part of the soil mix to aid with drainage!

You should definitely check out the soil and potting wiki for some solid guidelines on potting and soil types. Succulents love having good drainage and doing well in snug pots. It's super helpful for figuring out repotting and ideal soil mixes!
