What’s the best way to remove a concrete step from my patio?

I'm looking to get rid of a concrete step that's been added to my patio. It seems like this step was an afterthought when the house was built in 1974. It's not connected to the patio slab or the foundation; it's just sitting there with a thick layer of mortar. I'm planning to replace the door soon, and it would be easier to work if this step wasn't there. I'm thinking of replacing it with a more manageable wooden step in the future. What are some tips, warnings, or considerations I should keep in mind before breaking it out?

Removing that step might be tough! Don't underestimate how challenging it can be. A sledgehammer will definitely help, but expect it to take more time and effort than you think. Your body might be sore afterward, too! Just be prepared for some serious work, and maybe have a friend around to help out.

Why would you want to get rid of a solid concrete step? It might need some maintenance, but once it's built, it lasts and can save you a lot of hassle in the long term. If your goal is to expand your patio and enhance your outdoor space, maybe consider repairing it instead?

Instead of just smashing it out, you might want to try using a prybar. Slide it underneath and try to roll the step away using some rebar or a pipe. If that doesn’t work, you could also consider drilling into it and using a chain with a jack to lift it up. Just make sure you're careful and have a solid plan!
