What’s the best way to remove old ceiling paint?

I'm new to DIY projects and I need some advice on how to remove old paint from my ceiling. It's currently coated with chalk paint, and I've heard that new paint won't stick to it. Plus, there are a few cracks in the ceiling that need dealing with. What's the easiest method to tackle this?

You basically have a couple of options here. One is to just put up 1/4" drywall over the old ceiling. You can glue and screw it in place, and then just mud and paint over that. The other option is to sand down the ceiling with a pole sander—if it’s a big ceiling, you might want a powered one for that. It’s more labor-intensive, but it can really help prep the surface for new paint.

Has anyone tried washing it off? I know that some chalk paint can come off with water, especially if it’s on walls. I’m just not sure how effective that would be on a ceiling! Might be tricky.
