What’s the Best Way to Remove Rust from an Old Cow Bell?

I'm trying to clean up an old cow bell and I'm not sure about the best method to remove the rust and treat it afterward. I want it to look good and be usable again, but if I take it to football games, I don't want any oil on it. What do you recommend? Thanks for any tips!

Ever heard of using vinegar? Just leave it in a vinegar bath for about a week and occasionally shake it up. It does a great job on rust!

I'll have to try that out!

You'd be surprised, but soaking a rusty item in Coca-Cola overnight works wonders! Just clean it up after and if there's still rust, a quick rub with light sandpaper can help. You might want to repeat the process if needed.

For cleaning rust without damaging the bell, you might want to try electrolysis first. It’s effective! If that doesn't work, using a product like Evapo-Rust can be your next best option. If those aren't available, a grinder with a wire brush can do the trick, but be gentle. For protection, you can use a little oil or wax—just enough that it doesn't come off when you handle it. Given the vibrations from ringing, avoid hard coatings like lacquer.
