What’s the best way to replace missing brass tote nuts on Stanley No. 4 and No. 5 planes?

Hey everyone! I have a Stanley No. 4 and No. 5 plane, but I'm in a bit of a bind because both are missing the brass nuts that secure the tote handles. I've found some online, but they're around $20 each, which seems steep. I'm curious if anyone has found a cheaper, non-authentic solution just to make these planes usable again. Also, the handles themselves are broken; one is glued and holds up okay, while I haven't attempted to glue the second yet. I'm considering tracing out replacements, but I need advice on securing the handles. Any suggestions?

If you're looking for specific parts, check out this [link](https://just-plane-fun.myshopify.com/products/stanley-brass-barrel-nut-1) or reach out to Mike Jenks on Facebook. He avoids the 'tourist price' markup and usually has a ton of barrel nuts in stock, even if the site says they’re out.

Thanks for the tip!

Stanley uses a unique thread size that varies by type and year. My best advice is to look for a parts plane at a flea market; you could probably grab one for around $20. That way, you could salvage the nuts and maybe even find a good tote or knob in the process.

I've scavenged from a ton of old handyman planes for spare parts! It’s amazing how many can be revived just to help out a Stanley.

I’ll definitely be on the lookout at marketplaces too. I often see them listed in rough shape at high prices, so a little haggling might be necessary!
