I have an attic door in my garage with a significant gap of about an inch on all sides. I'm wondering what the best approach is to seal it when it's closed. Should I get a new door, or is there a way to weatherproof it effectively?

You might want to try getting a door that fits snugly. Weather stripping could help too, just to make sure it's sealed properly. A good fit can really make a difference!
Looks like your door might be a bit homemade! I have a heavier attic hatch that fits well and has insulation on top. It's not completely airtight, but it helps. Some people make a little insulated box that sits over the attic opening and add extra insulation around it. Pull that over the opening before closing the door for better sealing! I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like a solid idea.
