What’s the Best Way to Set Up a Height-Adjustable Grow Light System?

I know it seems a bit early to be thinking about next year's setup in August, but I was reminded I needed to find a better method for my grow lights after someone asked me about my current system. I have Spider Farmer grow lights with attachments and a pulley system, but I'm not very confident in them; they feel kind of awkward. Should I just replace that whole system, or does anyone have suggestions for a more reliable height-adjustable option, maybe involving shelves?

What I did was find the joists in my ceiling and screw in some eye hooks. Then I ran cotton string through them and made a slip knot to adjust my light's height—pretty ghetto-looking, but it works like a charm! Also, I've got a Home Depot shelving unit I used to wire the lights to.

Haha, I totally get that. My shelf area looks like a disaster zone too, but it does its job! I should probably clean my space out too, but who has the time?

Your setup sounds pretty effective! I've added some pics of my horrifying shelving unit too; it’s not pretty, but it works! ?

For my setup, I’ve been using ceiling hooks that I found on Amazon along with some affordable stainless steel shelves from Walmart. It’s been a solid setup for years, super easy and reliable!

I get it, grow lights can be REALLY tricky. Instead of moving them, I just stack my seed-starting trays on cardboard boxes. Start with taller boxes right under the lights and switch to thinner ones as the plants grow. It’s not glamorous, but it works!

That’s smart! I stuck with that method too. It keeps the lights stable and I don’t have to worry about them crashing down again. Trust me, once you have a light fall and nearly cause a fire, you won't want to mess with it.

For sure! I found some good box options at Costco; they’re sturdy and easy to store.
