What’s the Best Way to Strip Paint from a Dresser?

Hey everyone! I picked up a solid wood dresser from Facebook Marketplace about five years ago and decided to paint it black without really knowing what I was doing. I just slapped on some wall paint over the existing clear coat, and now it looks pretty rough. I'm finally ready to restore it but need advice on how to get that paint off. Any tips on the best methods or products to use? Also, after the paint is removed, should I sand the wood and apply a clear coat? Appreciate any suggestions!

Consider using a paint stripper – I learned from a pro that after applying the gel stripper, you can use coarse steel wool to scrub it off after the recommended wait time. It works like a charm! Definitely worth a try!

I’d recommend using a chemical paint stripper according to the instructions on the label. If you used latex paint, it should come off pretty easily. After that, just do a light sanding and seal it with some water-based polyurethane – it’s usually the easiest route. There are tons of YouTube tutorials that can help you with the process!

You have a few options for paint removal: chemicals, sanding, or sandblasting. In many cases, you'll combine chemicals and sanding for the best results. Before diving in, make sure to do some thorough research; it can really save you a lot of time and hassle!
