What’s the Best Way to Strip Paint from Exterior Brick?

I recently bought a charming brick ranch house from 1940, and I've noticed that the exterior was painted white back in 1995. Now, after over 30 years, the paint is flaking off everywhere, making the house look like it's shedding. I own a pressure washer, but I'm wondering if it's a good idea to use it on the brick. I need advice on what kind of professional to call for paint removal—is it a house painter, a mason, or just a handy person?

If you're feeling adventurous, you might want to try power washing first! Just be careful—I recommend starting light. If that doesn't work, look into blasting methods, but they can be more expensive. But honestly, once brick's painted, it can be tough to fully restore. Scraping with a wire brush and doing a light wash might be a good starting point, then you could just repaint with a quality brick paint.

Dry ice blasting is a great option for removing paint without causing any damage to the brick, but keep in mind it can get a bit pricey.

You could also consider soda blasting. It’s pretty effective at removing paint from brick.
