What’s the Best Way to Thank a Hardworking Solo Contractor?

Hey folks! I've got an unusual situation and could use your advice. I hired a well-known contracting company to build a 2nd-story deck, and to my surprise, there's only one guy doing the entire job. He's a young Hispanic guy who's been working tirelessly from 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM every day in the hot and humid weather, and he's doing an amazing job. I'm curious why the company sent just him for such a big project, but regardless, I want to make sure he knows I truly appreciate his hard work and not just the company's service. Is it appropriate to give him an envelope of cash at the end? If so, how much would be fair? Or is there a better way to show my gratitude without causing any issues for him with his employer?

Cash is definitely a solid way to go! Along with that, keeping him hydrated with Gatorade or cold water while he works will show your appreciation too. You might even consider getting his contact info for future projects; you could really use a quality worker like him!

Absolutely, everyone loves cash! Just make sure you also let him know he's doing a fantastic job. Maybe write a nice thank you note to go along with the money—it could really boost his spirits knowing his hard work is recognized.

Sure, slipping him an envelope of cash sounds like a great idea! Just make sure the company doesn’t find out, but I think he’ll appreciate the gesture. Some folks suggest a couple hundred bucks would be fair, especially if you think he’s being underpaid by his employer.
