I'm replacing some doors in my house, but I've encountered a problem: the wooden doors are 1/2" too wide. I'm wondering if I can simply plane off 1/4" from each side to make them fit, or if I'd need to use a power tool to cut them down to size. What's the best approach here?

If the doors are solid wood, a track saw is your best bet for precision. But if they're hollow, check how much material you have. You might also need to relocate the handle after trimming, so double-check the door opening is square before you start cutting.
If you're comfortable using a hand plane, then go for it! It might take some time, but it'll get the job done. However, if you're looking for a quicker method, I suggest using a power tool like a circular saw with a guide. Just make sure to wrap the edges with tape to avoid any tear out on those veneers.
A hand plane will take a while, but it can work well. If you have access to a circular saw or a table saw, those are faster options, too. Just remember that they'll all yield pretty similar results in the end. Choose what fits your comfort level and tools best!

Good point! I’m installing a new door into an old frame, so I need to make sure everything lines up. Thanks!
