What’s the Best Wood for a Small Desk Top?

Hey everyone! I'm currently working on building a small desk and need some advice on what type of wood to use for the top. I want something sturdy, but I'm avoiding butcher block because it's too large for my project. Basic plywood also won't cut it as I need a smooth surface like regular planks. Any recommendations?

I've made desktops from various materials, including MDF with veneer and thicker hardwoods. For most folks, it really just comes down to how you want it to look. Any hardwood or good-quality plywood should do the trick unless you have specific needs!

If you're looking for a solid choice, I recommend going with oak. Red oak is pretty affordable in my area, and it's strong enough for a desk. Honestly, most hardwoods would work fine as long as they're durable. Just avoid softer woods like balsa for this kind of project!
