What’s the Cost to Replace a Timber Retaining Wall?

I'm looking to replace a timber retaining wall that's about 18 inches tall and 90 feet long. The existing wall is made of 6x6 timbers, and I'm hoping to get a similar replacement. I'm located in northeast Pennsylvania, and the access to the wall is pretty straightforward from the driveway. However, I'm unsure about the condition of the drainage pipes and gravel behind the wall, so I expect that might need to be added or repaired too. Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for the cost per square foot to remove the old wall and install a new one?

Estimating can be tricky since prices vary by location. In my area, you might be looking at around $4,000 to $5,000 for the new wall, plus an additional $1,000 for tearing out the old one. I’d say a total of at least $4,000 would be a reasonable starting point, but be cautious if quotes start coming in lower than that.

It’s wise to get quotes from three proper local contractors. Make sure they have Workman's Comp insurance in addition to liability—this protects you in case anything goes wrong. Relying on online community advice might not give you the specifics you really need.
