What are your thoughts on lawns? I've just started working on my front yard and plan to replace the typical grass with clover, creeping thyme, and oxalis. Honestly, I find traditional lawns to be a big waste of space and time, especially if they just sit there unused. If a lawn serves a purpose, that's fine, but when I see barren yards with just a lawn and a few roses, it really gets to me. I want to know how everyone else feels—do you love your lawns or are you over them?

Sounds like a great plan! I totally agree that traditional lawns can be underwhelming, especially in small spaces. I prefer having plants that attract bees and the like. In my garden, the back lawn is where we enjoy stepping on grass to access different areas. At our last place, we removed the lawn due to rocky ground and replaced it with raised beds and gravel paths. Much better use of space!
I see both sides. A well-kept lawn can look lovely, especially if there's variety. But if it’s just a grassy area with no real purpose, it feels wasted when there are so many other cool options. I just made tons of changes to my backyard to include more edible plants and a flower garden, and it feels way more fulfilling than just cutting grass all summer!
I have lawns in both my front and back gardens, but I just let nature take its course. I mow it to keep it tidy enough for some outdoor chairs and if a weed pops up, I’m all for it! Gone are the days of watering and aeration; the lawn survives just fine on its own. It’s low maintenance and still looks decent come rain or shine!
I’ve got a half-acre, so I mix in everything—wildflower meadows, rose gardens, and a bit of lawn for activities like badminton and BBQs. Lawns have their place, but they're just one part of a bigger picture. The lawn gives a lovely flat area for fun, but I’m all about variety in my garden.
Lawns can be okay, especially when they serve a function, like a play area or a space for gatherings. I like the idea of mixing it up; some lawn, some flowers, and shrubs. It's all about balance! I’m not a fan of overly manicured lawns, though—it seems more appealing to let them flourish naturally and support wildlife. Just can’t stand all the artificial stuff!
I think lawns are useful if they have a purpose, like for kids or pets to play. Having a lot of open, unused lawn can feel like a waste, though. I recently replaced a large lawn area with a cottage garden and veggie patches, which feels a lot more productive. I still kept a bit of grass for occasional use but overall, I prefer a mix of everything!
I’m all about the lawn! My garden is mostly grass, and I just let it grow naturally with some moss and wildflowers here and there. Honestly, I love how springy it feels to walk on. Plus, it’s such a beautiful green space. But I get why some find the straight, manicured lawns dull—there’s definitely a charm to letting things grow more wild.
I’ve loved lawns but could always be tempted to change things up. If I had a large space, I'd plant edible gardens and more diverse flowers while still having a lawn for leisure. It really feels fulfilling to mix function with beauty!

Exactly! I’m with you on the biodiversity front. Those all-perfect lawns just don’t do it for me. It's great to have a bit of variety.
