What’s the Deal with Men and Marriage?

I've noticed that many men are still opting for marriage despite the potential risks involved. Personally, I've had relationships where I lived with different women, and in one case, I was given an ultimatum to either marry or face a breakup. This made me question: if leaving can be that easy without a marriage certificate, wouldn't it be easier to walk away after saying 'I do'? Are men just hoping their situations will turn out better than those of guys who seem to get burned in the divorce process?

As an attorney specializing in custody and divorce, I can say that for men especially, not marrying someone you're having kids with can be a massive mistake. I've had clients who thought it was fine to stay unmarried and they ended up losing everything when their partner left. Being married provides legal protections, which become crucial if children are involved. When you're married, you have rights to assets and even alimony in case things go south. So, for many men, marriage isn't just a 'piece of paper'; it's a safety net for their future as a family.

For me, marriage has been nothing like a trap. My wife and I have grown so much as a couple, and I know many guys who’ve had great experiences too. Sure, some men end up with partners who cheat or are gold diggers, but that’s often due to ignoring red flags early on. If you view marriage as a prison, then maybe you need to focus on finding a partner who truly supports you instead.

I've felt similarly about marriage. Until my 10 years living with my now wife, I thought it was unnecessary. But after a decade together, I realized the commitment that comes with marriage was genuinely meaningful for both of us. Yes, there are risks, and it might not work out for everyone, but the right partner makes it completely worth it. It might just take finding your 'unicorn' as they say!
