What’s the deal with that plastic seal on my bathroom sink?

I've got this plastic ring on the outside of my bathroom sink that seems to be meant for sealing out water, but it's looking pretty gross. I can't find a replacement for it and I'm considering just caulking around it instead. However, the sink is rusted and I can't replace it yet, so I need a temporary fix. Does anyone know what this seal is called and if it's worth replacing?

It sounds like you might be dealing with the sink overflow cover. You should definitely look that up to see if it matches what you've got! Just be careful, as sometimes those can be a bit tricky to manage without risking more damage.

Unfortunately no. Thanks for trying!

I couldn't see your setup, but sometimes it’s just poorly applied plumber's putty that can make it look messy. If you're thinking of caulking, make sure to clean the area thoroughly first to avoid trapping moisture underneath.
