What’s the Deal with the DCB205 and XR 5Ah Battery Confusion?

I was at a store today and came across a deal that included an impact kit with a DCB205 5Ah XR battery. However, I ended up grabbing a PowerStack XR 5Ah battery instead, and it wouldn't work for some reason. Then, someone helped me out by bringing over what they called a normal 5Ah Dewalt battery, which was also labeled as DCB205. I'm confused because there seems to be both a DCB205 that is XR and one that isn't, but they share the same model number. Is there really a difference, and why would they both have the same labeling? The guy at the store claimed it was just a labeling issue, but he wasn't exactly friendly about it. Any insights would be appreciated!

From what I understand, Dewalt updated the branding recently. All the 20V batteries are technically XR now, but the old ones just don't have the XR label anymore—except for the PowerStack and other new designs. So yeah, they're basically the same battery but with different branding.

You're not alone in your confusion! The XR branding was dropped from the regular 5Ah packs about a year ago, while they shifted it to the newer PowerStack models. So the performance is the same; it’s just about the labeling. It sounds like the store might not have updated their stock info, which can be super frustrating.

Totally get that! It's a bit strange that the XR model I have shows a 2025 date on it, while this one from the deal has a 2024 date and no XR label at all. Seems like a miscommunication somewhere in the product line!
