What’s the deal with the flange on oscillating tools?

I'm curious about the flange that comes with oscillating tools. What's its purpose? I noticed it can be attached to the blade holder, and I suspect it works as an adapter, but I can't seem to find any examples of how it's actually used.

The flange is mainly used for mounting blades that don’t have the quick-connect feature. If you're looking to use blades that need a bit more security when attached, that’s where the flange comes into play. It helps keep everything in place during your work, especially on older or specific blade styles.

Funny story, I actually lost mine after purchasing the tool! It took me three months to find it, and it was just sitting in a container five feet away from where it dropped. So yeah, these flanges can be pretty easy to misplace!
