Hey everyone! I've got a bit of a mystery here—there's a hole in the ductwork under my bathroom, and I'm curious as to why it's there. Could it be for freeze prevention since there's a garage below? Or maybe it's related to fitting the p trap? I'm just trying to think of reasons why a big hole would exist like that. I've included an image for reference if that helps! Thanks for any insights!

Looks like they made the hole just to fit the p trap, probably guessing it wouldn’t cause issues underneath it. But still, it’s a little sketchy regardless!
Is that p trap located inside a return air duct line? If it leaks, you’ll definitely notice it! Not sure if I’d leave it like that, though... just seems like an accident waiting to happen.
It’s actually above it, and it looks open to avoid freezing. It’s the p trap for the shower.
It's likely there to prevent your pipes from freezing, especially since there's an unheated space below them. Keeping that airflow helps the pipes stay warm during the winter months!

I’m not so sure about that. The heating from the duct should prevent freezing on its own. Plus, having a hole like that right over HVAC ducts seems risky for leaks.
