What’s the deal with this PVC pipe next to my oven hood vent?

Hey everyone! I've got a PVC pipe sitting next to my oven hood vent that seems to be letting rainwater in. When I turn on the hood fan, I can feel air coming from the metal pipe. I'm not really sure what the PVC pipe is for—does it even serve any purpose? Should I just cap it off to block airflow completely, or would it be better to put on some kind of ventilation cover? Any suggestions would be really helpful! It could be that I just need to seal it up, since I'm hearing some gurgling noises related to it. Thanks in advance!

It sounds like that PVC pipe is actually a plumbing vent, which usually helps expel sewer gases and allows the plumbing system to function properly. You definitely shouldn’t cap it off completely, as that could lead to pressure build-up and other plumbing issues. If it's letting rain in, you might want to look into a proper vent cover instead that allows airflow but keeps the rain out.

Got it! I was thinking it might be nothing since we have another proper vent on the other side of the house. I'll look into those vent covers instead.

Capping that PVC pipe isn't a good idea because the water would still need a way to drain. Protecting it from the rain is smart, but make sure you keep it vented. If you already have an active plumbing vent elsewhere, just go for a cover that allows air to flow without letting in the rain.

Thanks for the tips! I think a cover will work better than capping it altogether.
