What’s the Going Rate for Rough Cut Walnut? Need a Price Check!

Hey everyone! I recently got a quote from my local millwork for building a dresser out of walnut. They're offering me 10/4 walnut at $17 per board foot, 5/4 at $14.70, and 4/4 at $16.00. I don't have much to compare it with since my options are limited locally, but these prices feel pretty steep to me. I'd love to know what you're paying for walnut in your area. Should I just accept these prices, or am I out of touch with current rates?

In Georgia, my shop doesn't sell 10/4 walnut, but 4/4 and 8/4 are ranging from $8-10 per board foot. Maybe you just need to explore your options a bit more!

I’m in Georgia too! Do you have a particular source you recommend?

That sounds pretty high to me. In Central NC, I usually find prices below $10 per board foot. You might want to look around for better deals.

In the Midwest, walnut typically goes for about $7-8 per board foot. Just to clarify, that’s for lower grades. If you’re looking at prime walnut, expect to pay a lot more—$12 is more common from hardwood dealers.

From a mill, sure, but it's usually around $12 from a hardwood dealer.

What about the quality? I can get lower grades around that price too, but the nicer ones definitely cost more.

Your prices don’t seem that unusual. I just paid $17 for 8/4 here in Colorado. Just keep in mind that shipping can really add to overall costs. Five years back, it would've cost me $4-5 more for the same thing!

Good point! But just so you know, this is for local pickup.
