In a recent discussion about gardening, someone mentioned their confusion about why people plant things without a specific purpose. Personally, I always have at least one plant that I grow just to see what happens. This year, for instance, I decided to grow Szentesi Cherry peppers. I ended up with over 100 super spicy (but adorable) peppers! They were supposed to be mild, but they turned out way hotter than jalapeños with almost no flavor beyond the heat. The only use I can think of for them is as a cruel prank since they look like cherries. What about you? What have you planted with no expectations, just to see what it would be like?

I found these 10-cent black cherry tomato starts at a grocery store in August. It had one dying tomato, but I planted it anyway. A month later, it just started to flower! I hope I get at least one tomato for some seeds. None of my other tomatoes are flowering right now though.
I decided to throw some shade-loving seed mixes in a couple of beds that I thought would be too shady for most plants. It turns out, the earth tilted a bit and now they get too much sun for most of the seeds to thrive. Oops!

We're at peak tomato season where I am, and I've noticed a lot of black tomatoes in my community garden. My neighbor mentioned they're great for snacking but not so much for cooking, just FYI!
