What’s the Real Cost of Installing a Fence?

I'm curious about the costs and types of fences people have installed recently. Has anyone put up a fence in their yard in the last year? I'm specifically looking into aluminum/metal fencing, but the quotes I've been getting are outrageous—one was nearly as much as my down payment for the house! It's only a small yard, less than a fourth of an acre, so I'm wondering if others have faced similar costs or if there are more affordable options out there.

I just did about 400 feet of wood fencing, including 4x4 posts and 1x6 pickets, and the materials ran me around $6,000. It's a solid investment if you're looking for something more affordable than metal.

Last year, my neighbor installed a 6' wood fence that covered 895 linear feet, along with an electric gate, and it cost just under $40,000! That's a hefty price tag, but it’s a big job.

Yikes! That’s a serious investment. I’m surprised at how much prices can vary for different materials—especially considering how much a smaller yard costs.
