I'm pretty new to metalworking and have my drill press set for slow speeds, mainly for steel, but now I'm tackling a project that requires drilling 1" holes in pine boards (like 1x2 or 1x3). My initial test at about 125 RPM caused some tear-out and made feeding tough, needing a lot of pressure. What speed should I aim for when using a 1" Forstner bit? Also, what are the downsides of drilling too slowly? Is it just the extra time, or could it affect the quality of the holes? I have quite a few holes to drill, so while I don't mind taking extra time, I want to make sure the results are decent.

From my experience as a fellow amateur, I’d suggest trying around 1000 to 1250 RPM for a 1" Forstner bit in pine. Since pine is relatively inexpensive, it’s a good idea to test different speeds on some scrap pieces to see which gives the best result for you. Generally, softer woods like pine do better at higher speeds, while you’d go slower for harder materials or metals. Hope that helps!
I usually end up using a cordless drill for Forstner bits since my pieces often don’t fit in the drill press. It's more of a 'squeeze and push' method for me. A couple of tips: try putting masking tape on the area before drilling to help prevent tear-out, and once the bit breaks through, flip the piece over and drill from the other side to finish up. It can really improve the cut quality!
