I'm living in Zone 8b and I'm craving a challenge in my gardening pursuits. I'm curious to hear from you all about your experiences with the toughest flowers. What's the hardest flower you've managed to keep alive, and has there been one that was particularly tough to grow from seed?

I’ve tried to grow saffron and just can’t seem to get it right here. It's proven to be a real challenge for me! Maybe you’ll have better luck with it?

I’ve really struggled with keeping a hinoki cypress alive after transplanting it. It took a couple of summers just to get it to settle; I even had to set up a beach umbrella over it during the hottest afternoons to protect it! As for growing from seed, that New Zealand flax plant has been my nemesis – I’ve tried multiple times without success. Here’s a pic of what it could look like if I could ever get it to grow!

Orchids are tough cookies, man! Do you grow them indoors or outdoors? I’d love to try, but my cats would probably make a meal out of them!

I definitely get that! Cats and plants are a tricky combo. I've heard orchids need a lot of specific care too.
