What’s the Toughest Part of Adding an Extra Living Unit on Your Property?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to hear from those who've built or converted an additional living unit on their property, whether it's a detached unit, an attached one, a basement, or even a garage conversion. What was the most challenging part of your experience with this process? I'm talking about everything from permits and financing to finding a reliable contractor and managing the actual work. Also, I'd love to know if there were any surprises along the way, what you might do differently if you had to do it over again, and what kind of support would have made the whole job easier. Lastly, what kind of unit did you add, and was your motivation financial or to accommodate family? Thanks a lot!

As a contractor, I find that working with developers can be challenging, primarily due to communication issues. It's hard to manage expectations sometimes. Ensuring that every detail from the design to the plumbing is coordinated well can be tricky. If I could suggest anything, having a detailed plan from the get-go helps a lot!

That makes sense! Do you often help your clients with finance options for such projects?

In my experience, the toughest part was definitely navigating the permits. Every locality has different requirements, and I was shocked at how many inspections were involved. If I could do it again, I would definitely research this aspect more thoroughly before starting. Also, getting a good contractor who respects deadlines is crucial—but it's a bit of a gamble!

What kind of issues did you face with your contractor? Did they miss deadlines or something?
