What’s this part of my house called, and how can I fix it up?

I'm trying to identify a part of my house that we refer to as the 'chin.' What's the official name for it? Also, it's showing some wear and I'm considering fixing it up with a 1/4" PVC white sheet that I would paint. I feel a bit out of my depth here and could use some advice! Here's a link to a photo for reference: https://imgur.com/a/tNUwfsZ

I just call that feature an overhang. It definitely provides some shade and can protect the wall underneath. If you're looking to repair it, installing aluminum soffit like what's on your eaves could be a good solution. It’s relatively straightforward if you’re handy!

That’s actually a cantilever, creating an overhang! In my experience with siding, it’s common to use the same material above as you do below. Your siding looks fairly new, so your installer should be able to match it up easily. If you're feeling a bit DIY, you could probably tackle this without too much trouble.

Well, historically, ‘cantilever’ has some funny tax loophole associations, but that’s a bit of a stretch! Just focus on your home repair for now, lol. You might get some interesting insights by looking into cantilever structures if you’re curious.
