I recently purchased a house that has a soffit inside the attached garage, and I'm curious about its purpose. This detail didn't show up during the inspection. The house has a second-floor bedroom above the garage, so I'm wondering if this soffit is structural or just for looks. Why might it have been built this way?

It sounds like your garage might have been a later addition, or maybe they're just hiding something like drain pipes for the second floor. In my last place, we had a similar soffit to cover up some plumbing. It could just be for aesthetics too, though!
I get it, it’s a bit of a mystery! It’s possible the soffit is there to conceal air ducts or even something like a dryer vent. You might want to peek in there to see if there’s anything significant hiding inside!
That's a good point! There’s a forced air register on that bedroom wall, so it could definitely be related.
Honestly, it's hard to tell without looking. Many times, these are used to hide pipes or ductwork. If you really dislike it, you could always remove it to see what's hidden behind it!

That makes sense! I guess it’s all about aesthetics or utility.
