I'm new to growing dahlias and plan to use pots on my patio since my garden has really hard soil. I don't have a greenhouse, so I'm wondering when I can safely plant dahlia tubers outdoors. What month should I aim for?

You should aim to plant your dahlia tubers once the frost has passed. It's usually safe to start in May. Just keep an eye on the weather, and if there's a cold night, cover them up to protect them.
If you want to get a head start, you can pot them up as early as April. I like to start mine on a sunny windowsill and then take them outside during the day and bring them in at night until it's warm enough. But if you're going for it outdoors, wait until May for the best results.
