I recently got a window AC unit for my apartment, and this is the first one I've had with a drain plug. I don't really know when I'm supposed to open it to let the water drain. I live in New York, and it's been really humid since I installed it. Whenever I close the drain plug, I can hear the water running through the machine when it kicks on. Plus, there's water dripping out from the back grate. I'm confused about if this is normal and how often I should be opening the plug. I've left it open for weeks because it seems to fill up constantly, and even though I can drain a lot of water, there's still some left in the tray. I really don't want mold to build up in my AC. Can anyone give me some advice on what I should do?

It sounds like your drain plug might be better off left alone unless you're sure it's overflowing. Some AC units are designed to operate with a small amount of water because it helps cool the coils. If you’re under really high humidity and it’s getting too full, it might be best to drain it every now and then to prevent mold. Just keep an eye on it! It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation.

Yeah, I think it really depends on your model. Check if the manual mentions anything specific about humidity levels or draining. If it’s getting messy, draining it more often should help!
