When Should I Plant Snapdragons?

I'm getting my vegetable patch ready for planting, and I'm thinking about using it as a seed bed for Snapdragons. Should I start germinating the seeds in my potting shed and then move them to the veg patch to overwinter? Should I pinch out the tops in early spring and then plant them in their final spots? Or is it better to plant them directly in their permanent places just before winter hits? Do they need any protection over the winter, or can they handle it on their own?

I'm trying something different by directly sowing them this fall! Snapdragons are tough plants. I had one pushing its way through a crack in my front garden, so I think they'll manage fine. In the past, my seeds took forever to grow, so I'm hopeful this approach will boost their growth.

Funny you mention that! It's actually about RuneScape, where snapdragon seeds are used for potions in farming. Totally different context!

Snapdragons can survive the winter, but only if they're mature plants. If they’re still young, they might not make it through. I'd suggest waiting until early spring to start them in your shed.

Snapdragons typically won't survive a harsh winter. It's usually best to start them in a greenhouse or cold frame around March to ensure they'll flower that same year.
