When Should I Turn Off My Basement Dehumidifier?

Hey everyone! I've been running a dehumidifier in my basement and another one in my bungalow room, and I'm wondering when it's best to turn them off. Do people usually run them all year round? I live in Michigan, so the winters can get pretty dry. Any advice would be appreciated!

I usually turn mine off once I crank up the heat at home. We store our dehumidIFIER around September and bring out the humidifiers in late November. It’s a seasonal switch for us since we’re based in Virginia, which gets all four seasons.

Same here! I think it’s important to switch based on the season.

Honestly, I run my dehumidifier all year long. In the summer, it fills up fast and needs emptying constantly. During the winter, it runs less often, but I still like having it on just in case. It really depends on your humidity levels and how well your unit works!

Most dehumidifiers have a humidity setting that allows them to run automatically when the levels go above a certain point. I set mine up with a humidity sensor connected to my home assistant, so it kicks on when the humidity exceeds my set level. It's saved me a lot on energy costs!

That sounds smart! Do you find it works well to manage the humidity throughout the year?
