When Should I Use a Shooting Board vs. a Vise for Squaring Up Boards?

I'm diving into the world of hand planes and have been working on jointing both edges and end grains in my vise. It's taking a bit of back-and-forth planing to get them just right. Recently, I made a shooting board, and it has made squaring up end grain a breeze. I'm curious—what's the practical limit for using the shooting board? My setup can handle boards up to about 12 inches wide, but should I just stick to the vise for wider pieces? I'm experimenting, but I'd love to hear about your experiences!

I usually stick to a shooting board for boards around 8 inches wide or less. Anything wider than that often doesn’t need that level of precision for my projects, so I get by with my vise.

Gotcha, that makes total sense! Thanks for the insight!
