When’s the Best Time to Clean My Wildlife Pond?

Hey everyone! I have a small wildlife pond in my garden, measuring about 2ft x 2ft, with varying depths of around a foot in some spots and just a few inches in others. It's been a fantastic home for newts—I've seen up to six at a time lounging in the shallower part. There was a frog hanging around too, but I think it's moved on. Lately, a lot of dirt and dead leaves have been accumulating, and while I know the newts like to hide under them, it's starting to fill up. Plus, I want to check for any tears since the water level drops pretty quickly. Is there a specific time of year that's best for cleaning the pond without disturbing the wildlife? Sorry for the lengthy question!

I'm not sure of the exact best time, but I'd guess winter might be good since the newts and frogs tend to be hibernating. For a small pond like yours, the water level dropping could be just natural evaporation. If you have any plants around the edges, they could be using up some water too. Just my two cents!

Thanks! I noticed the level going down faster lately, even with heavy rain. I guess it is just evaporation. I’m hoping nothing's pierced it, though! ?

October sounds like a solid plan. I had some foxes dig near my pond and kick dirt in, so I’m anxiously waiting to clean it out. I’m thinking of putting up a net to catch leaves while still allowing wildlife to access it. Fingers crossed it helps!

I usually clean my pond around October, after all the critters have bred but before they go into hibernation. When you scoop out debris, try leaving it in piles on the pond's edge so any creatures can crawl back in if they want. It's a gentle way to do it!

I second this approach; it's what I do every year!

Thanks for sharing that! I'll definitely make a note of it!
