When’s the Best Time to Mow This Year?

I'm mostly stuck in bed at the moment, which gives me a perfect excuse to let my lawn get a bit wild. I'm curious about everyone else's mowing schedules this year. When are you planning to make that first cut, or have some of you already gotten started?

I’ve been mowing weekly lately! Not sure if it's the best approach, but it definitely makes cleaning up after my dog easier!

I did my first mow a few weeks back and just cut again on Monday. I even scalped it, scarified, and put down new seed right before the rain hit—fingers crossed it all comes back nice and green! I also added some wildflower seeds to attract pollinators. It's looking promising!

Do you have to wait to mow again after putting the new seed down? I just seeded too!

That happened to me two weeks ago! The pigeons wiped out all the seeds I planted. It's just been a watering game for me since.

I mowed about three weeks ago, and while it wasn't completely necessary, it definitely made the garden look tidier. I’m just waiting for my new mower to arrive, and I can't wait to mow again!

Which mower did you go with?

Same! I have my new lawnmower being delivered today too. I plan to give it its first cut this weekend if the weather cooperates!

I did a high cut about two weeks ago and then went shorter this weekend. Glad I did since there was so much thatch to rake out afterward!

I mowed twice in the last couple of weeks, just scarified and overseeded too when the rain was finally on the way. It’s finally soaking in today!

I’m lucky to have a decent-sized garden, so I’ve left part of it wild for over a year except for occasional weeding. It's boggy ground, so I think letting it grow helps the drainage. For the part closer to the house, I’ve been mowing regularly since early March. Leaving some areas wild is great for pollinators—I’ve even seen moles and hedgehogs around!
