I'm in mid Michigan (zone 6) and I'm a bit confused about the best time to cut my hardy hibiscus plants back to the ground. I've come across a few different opinions: some sources suggest doing it from late March to early April, while others say to wait until after the last frost, which for us is usually around mid-May. How do you all handle this? When do you typically cut yours back? Thanks in advance!

I usually trim mine around this time as well. If you're dealing with Hibiscus syriacus, they won't actually start growing until May even in zone 5. They tend to look dead until the right moment hits, so don't stress too much if they look bare! Just know that they'll come back when they're ready.
Cutting back your hardy hibiscus around late March to early April should be fine. They won't start leafing out until they're truly ready, so you don't need to worry too much. Some gardeners prefer to cut in the fall, but if you leave one stem intact until they start to grow, it can help remind you where they are in the spring. Keep an eye on them!
