I've been out looking for slugs during the mornings and evenings with my head torch, but I feel like I haven't seen many at all—maybe less than thirty in the whole month! Am I just imagining things, or is something going on with the slug population this year?

You're definitely not alone! I've noticed a drop in slug sightings as well. I found a few under the pots, but nothing out in the open yet. It's probably too cold and dry for them right now. Just keep an eye out, they may turn up when the weather gets better!
I read somewhere that this year is a lighter year for slugs due to the weather patterns we've had, like fewer frosts. I'm experiencing hardly any slug activity in my garden, and my plants are thriving—unlike last year where I was constantly relocating them! Even when I water at dusk, they’re not showing up in numbers like before.
It might have to do with the weather! When it rains, you’ll usually see them come out in droves. This month has been particularly sunny and dry, which doesn't help. Just be patient; they could be hiding out waiting for some moisture to venture out.
We had a rainy spell recently, but I'm still not spotting any slugs around!

Relocating slugs sounds like a real labor of love! My garden was practically a slug slaughterhouse last year.
