Where can I find a 12V linear actuator that extends about 8 inches?

I'm on the hunt for a 12V linear actuator that can extend around 8 inches (or so). Ideally, I need one that moves at 30mm/sec or faster. I came across some options on Amazon, but they only extend 4 inches and move at 50mm/sec, which just won't cut it for my cosplay wings. Any recommendations?

Is it a must that you use a linear actuator? Perhaps a linkage setup could work too. Something like a car window motor might do the trick; they usually have a lot of torque with a built-in worm gearbox.

I’m definitely open to alternatives! Where would you suggest I buy a car window motor?

You could try using an umbrella mechanism or a power window regulator from a junkyard. They’re cheap and can give you more than 8 inches of travel. Just keep in mind they’re heavier than the typical umbrella guts. But linear actuators can get really pricey, so this might be the way to go!

You could check out Alibaba. They have a lot of these kinds of actuators available as commodities. Just search for linear actuators there.

I’d prefer not to spend a thousand bucks on this! I like making my own costumes each year.

Have you thought about building a mechanical multiplier? You might be able to get 8 inches of extension using a 4-inch travel actuator by incorporating some clever design tricks.

That sounds interesting! I’m trying to figure out a way to make it work without losing mobility. Got any ideas on how to set that up?

Yeah, let’s just say that creating the perfect multiplier has baffled many for years—good luck with that!

Have you ever thought about repurposing existing mechanisms? Check out hismith for some ideas on how to create linear motion using a motor.

If I already had a machine to repurpose, I probably wouldn’t be looking for new options!
