Where Can I Find Fresh Currants in the U.S.?

My husband, who grew up in the UK, absolutely loves currants and I want to surprise him with some for his upcoming birthday in November. I've had a tough time locating them here in Florida, and I'm open to either paying for shipping or making a drive if necessary. Does anyone know where I might be able to find fresh currants?

I used to love all types of currants—black, red, and white! They have a bad reputation for harming trees, but there are some places where you can get preserves to make delicious jam tart. By the way, I'm pretty sure you can order currants frozen; it’s perfect for baking pies!

I don’t know if you’ll find fresh currants in stores around you, but I have seen them at farmers' markets or specialty stores that partner with local farmers, although it sounds like they’re pretty rare. If you can’t find fresh ones, you might still have luck with currant jams or preserves at European grocery stores—particularly those focusing on German or Eastern European products.

Finding fresh currants can be tricky since they were banned from being grown in the U.S. for years due to concerns about them being a host for a tree disease. Some states have lifted those restrictions, but not all. You might want to check Florida's current laws regarding currant cultivation. For now, trying to locate frozen currants online could be a good alternative if fresh ones aren't available.
