Where can I find large blocks of wood for my project?

I'm on the hunt for large blocks of wood approximately 4 inches by 4 inches and about 1 foot long. Online options are mostly just thin planks which won't work for my needs. I'm hoping to avoid buying a bunch of planks, so if anyone knows where I can find these larger blocks, that would be awesome!

Fencing supply stores are a great bet too! They usually carry cedar or redwood posts that could work for your project.

A quick fix would be to buy thinner boards and glue them together yourself! Just keep in mind, the nominal size for a 4x4 post is actually 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches. You can find treated posts for outdoor use, but be careful using treated wood indoors. Otherwise, a hardwood supplier should have what you’re looking for, or at least larger pieces that can be cut down to size.

If you're open to it, you might also scout Facebook Marketplace. I run a sawmill, and you’d be surprised what people post. Sometimes you can find good deals there!

4x4 posts aren't hard to come by. I recommend calling your local lumberyard; they'll likely help you out unless you're after something really rare.

You can find 4x4 posts at places like Home Depot without too much hassle. If you're considering hardwood, look for a lumber dealer that carries 16/4 stock. Just so you know, I used to find oak in Michigan, but you can often just laminate together some thinner boards. That's usually a solid solution too!

Have you thought about contacting timber framing companies? They might have scraps or leftovers they’d be willing to part with for a good cause!
