Where can I find large wood blocks for carving?

I'm looking for large blocks of wood that are around 1'x1'x1' for carving purposes. Quality isn't my main concern since I've used construction lumber before. I'm thinking something like pine would work. Any suggestions on where to find these?

You might want to check with specialized wood shops or lumber mills; they'll usually have what you need. Another option is to do glue-ups—just assemble a bunch of flat and square boards with clamps and wood glue to create your own large blocks. This way, you can avoid the issues of stability that come with big uncut pieces since they can crack as they dry.

Consider reaching out to local arborists and firewood suppliers; they often have access to larger wood pieces that you could use for carving.

You can also try Got Wood; they specialize in wood turning blanks, and some of those might work well for your carving needs. I've bought a lot from them, and while stock can get low occasionally, they've always been reliable.

Finding a lumber mill could be a great option. You might even strike a deal with the owner—offer them a nice carving in exchange for wood! It's a win-win if you can work something out.

Check out Heinecke Wood; they offer customizable sizes and the quality is top-notch. Shipping can be pricey, but if you're up for a road trip, it might be worth it. I've got a leftover piece, but it's time for me to reorder some more soon!
